What is AVID?

AVID Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help students who desire to go to college and are willing to work hard. To address this need, AVID has developed the AVID Elective course. Students receive additional academic, social, and emotional support for one period a day to help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses. Often, AVID students will be the first in their families to attend college and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

The power of AVID Secondary is the ability to impact students in the AVID Elective class and all students throughout the campus. AVID Secondary can affect the entire school by providing classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that can be incorporated into any classroom to improve student engagement and success.

What the AVID Elective is...
  • AVID is for students who have the potential for honors, advanced, Pre-AP*, AP* work in school but need support paired with the rigor.
  • AVID combines rigor with support that includes each student's own individual determination  and the support of teachers, other AVID students, family members, the AVID teacher(s), and college tutors.
  • Students in AVID must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher throughout the school year.
What the AVID Elective is not...
  • AVID is not an "at risk" system. It is designed to support students who would otherwise not attend and graduate from a four-year college/university or trade school.
  • AVID is not for students who fail to complete any of their homework.
  • AVID is not for students who consistently receive grades of "D" or "F."
  • AVID is not for unmotivated students. They must have individual determination.
Some additional factors to consider when identifying a potential AVID Elective student...
  • Has a GPA of 2.0 to 3.5.
  • Is proficient or close to proficient on state tests.
  • Comes from a low-income or single-parent family.
  • Would be first in their family to attend college.
  • Is able to complete four-year university entrance requirements prior to graduation.
  • Is a hard worker, has a positive attitude, and is collaborative in nature.
  • Is from a racial, cultural, or economic group historically underrepresented in colleges and universities.
  • Has potential, but may also have special circumstances that could be obstacles to achievement.
